Meeting in 1 week

Next den meeting will be in 1 week, given the holidays.
Bring your drills, extension cords, drill bits and screw driver bits.  We are building the Klondike sleds.
The dens meetings this month should be a lot of fun, building and honing outdoors skills.  I will need to know who will NOT be attending the klondike on 1/26.  I will be turning in our roster in shortly after the next den meeting.
Plan is to camp out (in a heated cabin) on Friday and then Sat AM the klondike begins!  We are also welcome to camp out Sat night too, free to do our own thing.
Parents, I will need a volunteer to supply:  10 pieces of 6 foot rope and three 6 ft poles.  In addition if you can figure out how to do lashing of poles to connect them together that would be great we will need to teach the boys!

Phil

This is ultimately what we will need in the sleds:

Items needed on the sled:
Scout Handbook
Patrol Flag
Patrol Roster
Patrol Cheer (to be yelled)
First Aid Kit
Two blankets
Ten pieces of 6’ rope
Three 6’ poles
Compass
Paper and Pencil
Fire starting materials (no commercial products) Filled water bottles (one for each participant) Helmet (required for sled rider) Appropriate footwear (boots, no sneakers)

Meeting 12/10 Klondike

We will meet at the church tonight and start working on the Klondike sled.
I will bring the wood.
We could you some additional measuring tape, squares, and straight edges.
I was thinking the scouts could measure and mark up the wood tonight and then some adult volunteers could cut the pieces this week (adults are allowed to operate the power saws.)
We can then have the scouts assemble the sled at future meetings until complete.

Den Info week of 11/12

Den 5, great job at the North Museum and a big thank you to the parents who supervised.  I wish I was there.  You all earned your Science Badges.
This week we have a lot going on
Monday - Den meeting (more info below) at St Thomas 7pm-8 (Though I need to leave by 7:45)
Saturday--Scouting for Food pick up. St Thomas 9am
Sunday--Den 5 hike, Muddy Run.  Meet at Giant to Go 12:30pm, return at 4pm.

Monday 11/12 Den Meeting.  Scouts work on Leave No Trace Posters which they will present at the Pack Meeting the end of the month.  This is part of the "Leave No Trace" Patch, which many in the Den will earn if they attend the hike on Sunday.  The boys need to apply the "Leave no Trace" principles on 3 separate Den outings.  We did it at Summer Camp, the Gettysburg Trip, Hawk Mountain, and another opportunity will be at the Muddy Run hike this Sunday.  I think at this point only Nick Edelman and Nico have completed 3.  Jacob G and Jacob P, Drew, and Carver have completed 2, and will finish if they attend the hike on Sunday.  The remaining boys will need additional den outings, but there will be plenty of opportunity the rest of the year.
***I will also handout additional information on the Klondike Derby which will be held at Camp Mack 1/26.

Saturday we will meet at St Thomas at 9am and then head out as a Den and pick up the food bags that you had dropped off last Sat.

Sunday:  Meet at 12:30 at Giant To Go.  We will car pool to Muddy Run lake in S. Lancaster County and complete a 3 mile hike around the lake.  Bring a plastic bag to pick up any trash we find so that we are practicing "Leave No Trace."  (Jacob, Jacob, Drew and Carver can finish their "Leave No Trace.") We will be back around 4pm, so in time for Dinner.  Just dress warmly and bring a water bottle and snack.

Thanks and see you Monday!

I actually have you listed with 2 registrations.  One for 8 scouts and 2
adults, and one for an additional 2 scouts.

Thank you for your interest in our Webelos program and I look forward to
meeting you on November 9.

As I mentioned, I am working overnight that night and cannot attend, I reserved 2 adults and all the scouts(10).  We will need to decide who will attend from the adult standpoint and who will drop the kids off.  You can contact Mike if more than 2 adults wish to attend, I'm sure that would be fine.

Please wear uniforms and bring books.
The good Mr Goldstein has agreed to lead the meeting as Dr B will be in the hospital (working that is.)
Plan to review the Webelos requirements involving learning about Boy Scouts, starting on page 54.

This would also be a good time for some scouts to complete needed requirements:

The Pack meeting is the following Monday 10/29

Den 5 Mon 10/15

I have to remind myself that I lived 8 years in the Pacific NW where I would do all kinds of outdoors activities in the rain.  After all, what choice did I have?
Plan tonight is to meet at Overlook Park at the Discovery Playground.  7pm.
Please bring rain jackets and appropriate shoes.
There is a covered pavilion where we can meet and do activities if it is raining heavily, but looking at the map there is a good chance the rain will have passed by then.
Please bring your Webelos books.
Adults, if one or two of you could bring a lantern that would be appreciated.

Plan:  Campfire meeting:
Flag Ceremony
How to build a campfire
Make campfire
Cook S'mores
Clean up
game

If raining, there is a grill area just outside the pavilion where we can build the fire and roast S'mores.
Also if raining will spend time covering pages 54-59 Understanding Boy Scouts.

In summary, meet at Overlook Park 7-8pm
Campfire if light rain
Activities under the pavilion if raining.

Either way, bring jacket and preferably rain gear as well as flashlights

See you tonight!!

Den 5 Meeting 10/8

Reminder the meeting will be this Monday at St Thomas church, 7-8pm.
Plan:
Review the Webelos uniform and badge as part of the Webelos requirement.
Plan our campfire meeting(10/15)--the scouts need to plan what we do.
Start the design of the Klondike sled.

We are in the process of reserving spots at the Science Factory for the Engineer badge.  Due to the limited available spots we will need to split into 2 groups.  One group on March 9th and one group on April 13th.

The workshop starts at 3pm and ends at 7:30pm. The cost per scout is $10.00,
Den Leaders are free and any additional parents, chaperones, siblings etc.
are admitted at our group rate of $5.50. We are not able to integrate
non-Webelos siblings/friends into Workshop, but they are able to spend time
on the exhibit floor during the program as long as they have adult
supervision.
If either date works let us know, but if there is one date that is a no-go, we will give your scout preference for the alternate date.
Also, I would like to collect the money for the North Museum Science Badge at the Oct 15th campfire meeting.  Cost was $12.50 / scout.  I had to pay at the time of registration.

We have 4 boys who have either already joined scouts or are interested in joining our den!
Riley Bernhardt , Hilton and Ryan Lam, and Henry Willis
We have a Den blog that contains all the email information, please check it periodically.  The link should be at the bottom of this email.

Gettysburg Camp Trip!

Devil's Den 5!!!
Wow!  What an amazing time together, what a great trip!  I know Nico and I will remember it the rest of our lives.  Another congratulations and thank you to the scouts on their service to the Park and their Leave No Trace service project at Devil's Den.  20 lbs of garbage removed, some cans dating back to the late 70's or early 80's.  Imagine trash that has sat there for 30 years, now properly disposed of.
Please enjoy the photos.
