Den Meeting 12/12

In the spirit of the Holidays the scouts should complete achievement 1 at home this week.  I would like the scouts to share what Holiday their family celebrates this time of year and how their family celebrates.  Are there any traditions they follow?  The rest of the meeting we will play games together.  The two denners (Jacob and Drew) will plan some games for us to play.  It is a time for the boys to have fun before the Holidays.
12/19 is the Pack meeting.  Jesse performs his magic trick.  Nico does the dollar bill trick.  Den 5 contributes the 200 spiral notebooks and we help the pack assemble school supply packages for needy kids.  I purchased the notebooks online, if you could pay me back $15/scout that would be appreciated.  If you cannot I understand and that is fine.  We also pick up our Pinewood Derby cars kits.  If you cannot attend the pack meeting, make plans to have someone pick up your car kit for you.

Den Meeting Update

Very good meeting, Scouts!  I was impressed with your thoughts about what makes America great!

The scouts should be bringing home a poster they made representing things they think make America great.  They can continue to work on these at home and they will need to bring these posters to the Pack meeting on 12/19 so that they can share them with the whole pack.

Next Den meeting will be in 1 week, 12/5.  Scouts will need to work on Achievement 4 at home and be ready to participate with the Den around this topic.

Magic:  This was a big hit this meeting.  For the 12/5 meeting, scouts are encouraged to work on a magic trick and perform it for the den.  Two scouts, Nico and Jesse, were picked to perform their magic tricks at the Pack meeting 12/19.  Carver will do his magic trick for the Pack in Jan.

Skits/Jokes:  I'd like to see the scouts perform more skits or jokes.  They can perfom these in front of the Den and the best will be able to perform them for the Pack.  This will help develop confidence and public speaking skills.  So, ask your scout if there are any skits or jokes they want to share with the Den.  They can let the Den leaders know about it at the start of the meeting and we will give them their time to perform.  As long as the jokes are not "dirty" and don't put anyone down, I'll give them freedom to share with the den.  After all they are boys and its ok to be goofy.

Denners:(24b) This role helps to complete achievement 24, be a leader.  By the end of Jan, all the boys will have been a denner once.  So, please review achievement 24 and help the boys finish anything they need to satisfy the rest of the requirement.  If your scouts were at the meeting where we helped teach the Tigers the bobcat, they will have also completed 24a, so they just need to review 24f with you at home.
New Denners for the 12/5 meeting:  Drew Brown - will lead the "pledge"and "cub scout promise"  Jacob Geiter - will plan and lead the closing game.

For our next den meeting on 11/28 please complete the following at home:

Elective 13 - Magic Handkerchief.  Whoever is the best at it can do it for the pack at the Dec pack meeting!  Everyone will have a chance to show us your skills at the 11/28 den meeting, so work on it for then and bring your props.

Den 5 Cooking in Chaos

Congratulations, Scouts!  You should all be proud, taking more responsibility for your meetings.  Tonight was a lot of fun.  We will call it cooking in chaos!  You all completed achievement 9.  In one meeting you cooked 2 packets of Jello, 3 pots of "old school" popcorn, a batch of chocolate chip cookies and a batch of oatmeal.   Whew, that was a lot!!  I must say you are all excellent cookie makers.

Mr. Brown is putting together a fun outing next week, so look for the email later in the week.

Denners for this month are:  Nico and Carver.  Carver will lead the next opening ceremony--so prepare.  They both will assist Mr Brown with the meeting.

Skit:  Practice "the Amazing Handkerchief" page 232

Rocket Launch, Den 5 kickoff event! 9/12

Some of you may have noticed that is has been somewhat rainy, but if the weathermen are worth anything they have Monday as a clear day!
That means Rocket Launch day!!
If you already built a rocket bring it, engines (with electric igniters), and recovery wadding to the field behind Nitrauer Elem.  No need to worry about starting a wild fire, the grass is green.
If you did not build a rocket, get a kit at Winkie's hobby or AC Moore/Micheals.  Look for a skill level E2X (easy to assemble.)  Build it at least the day prior to allow glue to set.
Needed:  Rocket, engine (probably size C--check your rocket kit for recommended sizes), electric starters (should come in the engine pack), and the recovery wadding.

Meeting: Nitrauer Elem 7pm-8pm.  9/13 (If the weathermen lie and it is more than sprinkling, we will meet at St Thomas for an alt. meeting.)

3...2...1....See you then!!!

Arrow placement on uniform

Arrowheads are earned both during the Wolf year and during the Bear year.  I added a link for scouts on the Pack 184 page that reviews cub scout uniforms and patch placement.  Please check it out on the right side under "links for scouts."  There is only one gold arrow point for Wolf and one Gold arrow for Bear.  The remaining arrows are silver.  As the link shows, you group the wolf arrowheads below the Wolf badge on the left side of the uniform, and next year the Bear arrows will be grouped below the Bear badge.

Go See it March 5th! Saturday

We are planning a go see it, Sat March 5th.
Meet at Hands On House parking lot at 3:30pm.
We will caravan from there to Middle Creek wildlife preserve to see the Snow Geese.  Snow geese are beautiful white birds with black tips on their wings.  They migrate through Middle Creek in March at the peak they will have 100,000 birds at a time on the lake and surrounding fields.  It is hard to know when the peak will occur, but they have some moving through already so they will at least have a good showing for March 5th.

see link for example:

This is a popular event, so plan on plenty of cars and need to do some walking to get down to the water.  It is really a sight, though.
Bring binoculars and cameras.

Please RSVP so we know who to expect at Hands on House.
